If your concrete keeps cracking, you’re not crazy.

Most San Diego masonry contractors skip the steps that make the work last. Three common patterns we hear after a bad job. Here’s what we hear most often when people call us to redo someone else’s concrete work.

!

“Our patio cracked in year two.”

Contractors skip sub-base prep to win on price. We grade, compact, and add proper aggregate base for every pour. Cracks come from skipped sub-base, not bad luck.

!

“The retaining wall is leaning already.”

Walls fail when there’s no engineered drainage behind them, no geogrid where needed, and footing depth below the frost line is skipped. We build for the slope, not for the photo.

!

“The hardscape looks like a 1980s tract home.”

Catalog-pick pavers thrown down without yard integration look exactly like that. We coordinate masonry color, pattern, and edges with the planting and architecture.” from premium. We don’t install the cheap stuff.

!

“The seams are everywhere”

Bad seaming = visible lines forever. Our crew uses overlap-cut + proper seam tape + brushing direction — you don’t see where one piece ends and the next begins.

Frequently Asked

San Diego Masonry and Concrete FAQ

Real answers about why concrete cracks, what proper sub-base costs, and what to look for in a masonry contractor.

How long does a typical concrete or masonry project take? +
Patios and driveways: 1 to 2 weeks of build time after a 1 week design and quote phase. Retaining walls with engineering: 2 to 4 weeks. We give you a fixed timeline in the written quote.
Why does concrete keep cracking? +
Three reasons: skipped sub-base preparation, no expansion joints, and pouring on uncompacted soil. We grade and compact aggregate base to spec on every pour and cut proper control joints.
Do retaining walls in San Diego need permits? +
Walls over 3 feet (measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall) require permits and engineered plans in San Diego. Walls under 3 feet typically do not. We handle the submission if needed.
What is a typical budget for residential masonry work? +
Patios: $15 to $35 per sq ft installed depending on material. Retaining walls: $45 to $120 per linear foot depending on height and material. Outdoor kitchens: $25K to $75K. Your quote breaks scope into line items.
What materials do you work with? +
Concrete (broomed, stamped, exposed aggregate), pavers (Belgard, Stepstone, custom), natural stone (flagstone, travertine, slate), and engineered block (Keystone, Allan Block, Versa-Lok).
What warranty comes with the work? +
5-year workmanship guarantee on structural elements (walls, footings, slabs). 1-year warranty on finish work (sealers, joint sand). Lifetime call-back support on anything we build.
