The Basics
What Is Pickleball Court Design & Installation?
A pickleball court is a hard-surface playing area measuring 20 by 44 feet for the lines, set inside a total pad of roughly 30 by 60 feet to allow out-of-bounds movement. It uses a concrete or asphalt base, acrylic color coating, painted lines, a center net at 34 inches, and perimeter fencing.
A pickleball court is built on a post-tension concrete slab (concrete with steel cables that resist cracking) or an asphalt base, with concrete preferred in San Diego’s expansive clay soils. The playing surface is acrylic hard-court coating such as SportMaster or Plexipave, layered as a cushioned or standard system and finished in your color choice with regulation line paint. Cushioned options like SportMaster ProCushion add shock absorption underfoot. A regulation net sits at 36 inches on the sidelines and 34 inches at center, on posts set in concrete. Perimeter fencing is usually black vinyl-coated chain link at 8 to 10 feet, and LED sport lighting extends evening play. Windscreens and shade are optional.
Our Process
How We Build Pickleball Court Design & Installation in San Diego
1
Site Evaluation and Layout
We check the yard for a level 30 by 60 foot footprint, test soil and drainage, and orient the court north-south so the sun stays out of players’ eyes.
2
Grading and Base Prep
Crews excavate and compact a stone base, setting drainage and forms. In expansive clay we build a thicker, reinforced sub-base to prevent future heaving.
3
Slab Pour
We pour a post-tension or reinforced concrete slab, or lay and roll an asphalt base, sloped a slight amount so rainwater sheets off without ponding.
4
Cure and Surface Prep
The slab cures, then we clean, patch low spots, and flood-test for level so the acrylic system bonds to a true, dry surface.
5
Acrylic Coating
Multiple coats of SportMaster or Plexipave acrylic go down, cushioned or standard, building the color and texture that control ball speed and grip.
6
Line Striping and Net
We mask and paint regulation 20 by 44 foot lines, then set net posts in concrete and hang the net at 34 inches center.
7
Fencing, Lighting, Walkthrough
Perimeter fencing, optional LED lights, and windscreen go in, then we clean up and hand over the finished court.
Cost
Helpful Navigation Links
In San Diego, a backyard pickleball court generally runs $25,000 to $50,000, with premium builds going higher. A concrete base typically costs $9,000 to $18,000, while asphalt is less. Acrylic surfacing like SportMaster runs a few dollars per square foot, and cushioned systems cost more. Site prep on sloped or clay lots adds $2,000 to $10,000 or more, and fencing, LED lighting, and windscreen add to the total. A 30 by 60 foot court averages around $45,000 finished. San Diego Specifics
Built for the San Diego Climate
San Diego’s mild zone 10a/10b climate makes a pickleball court playable nearly every day, but the region’s expansive clay soils are the real design challenge. Clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which cracks a thin slab, so we build a reinforced sub-base and often use post-tension concrete. Winter rain from November through March drains off a properly sloped court. Strong coastal sun and afternoon glare are why we orient courts north-south, and UV-stable acrylic resists fading in the year-round sunshine.

Pickleball Court Design & Installation in San Diego: FAQs
How much does a pickleball court cost in San Diego?
A backyard court generally runs $25,000 to $50,000, averaging around $45,000 for a full 30 by 60 foot pad. The concrete base is often $9,000 to $18,000, acrylic surfacing like SportMaster adds a few dollars per square foot, and clay-soil site prep can add $2,000 to $10,000. Fencing and LED lighting raise the total. We give a free on-site estimate.
How long does it take to build a pickleball court?
Most backyard courts take three to six weeks. Grading and the base take about a week, the concrete slab needs roughly 28 days to cure fully before acrylic coating, and surfacing, line striping, net, and fencing wrap up the final days. Weather and permit review can extend the schedule. Asphalt bases cure faster than concrete but still need prep time.
Do I need a permit for a pickleball court?
Often yes. Many San Diego jurisdictions require a permit for the slab, grading, drainage, and especially fencing over 6 feet or sport lighting. Setbacks from property lines and lot coverage limits apply, and HOA design review is common. Lighting hours may be restricted to limit glare on neighbors. We handle the permit and confirm rules before construction.
What surface is best for a pickleball court?
A post-tension concrete base topped with acrylic hard-court coating like SportMaster or Plexipave is the standard, because it plays true and lasts. A cushioned system such as SportMaster ProCushion softens impact on knees and joints. Asphalt is a lower-cost base but cracks sooner in clay soil. Concrete with acrylic gives the most durable, low-maintenance court in San Diego.
How much maintenance does a pickleball court need?
Very little. Sweep leaves and debris, rinse the acrylic surface a few times a year, and keep the net and posts clean. The acrylic coating like Plexipave needs a fresh recoat roughly every 4 to 8 years depending on use and sun. Repaint lines with each recoat. Keep the drains and fence clear, and address any hairline cracks early before they widen.
How long does a pickleball court last?
The concrete or asphalt base lasts decades, and the acrylic surface holds up 4 to 8 years before a recoat refreshes color and texture. Post-tension concrete resists the cracking that clay soil causes, so a well-built court stays true for many years. UV-stable SportMaster coatings resist San Diego sun. Recoating is routine upkeep, not a rebuild, so the court remains a long-term investment.
How much space does a pickleball court need?
The lines measure 20 by 44 feet, but a proper court needs a total pad of about 30 by 60 feet so players have room to move behind the baseline and beside the sidelines. Tighter yards can use a smaller buffer if space is limited. Orienting the court north-south reduces sun glare. We measure your lot to confirm it fits.
Pickleball or a tennis court?
A pickleball court needs only about 30 by 60 feet and costs $25,000 to $50,000, while a full tennis court needs roughly 60 by 120 feet and costs far more to build and surface. Pickleball fits most backyards and suits all ages. A tennis court can be striped for pickleball too. For limited space and budget, pickleball is the practical choice.
