Tell us about the slope and the wall height you’re considering. We’ll send back a written quote with engineering scope if needed, within one business day.

If your hillside contractor sounded confident but the wall is leaning, you’re not the first.

Most retaining walls fail in the same predictable ways. We’ve fixed all of them. Here’s what we hear most often when people call us to rebuild a failed wall.

!

“The wall is leaning two years in.”

Walls fail when there is no geogrid reinforcement behind taller sections and no drainage layer to relieve hydrostatic pressure. We design for the soil and the slope, not for the brochure.

!

“Water pools behind the wall in winter.”

Missing weep holes or French drain behind the wall traps water during rainy season. We install drainage rock, filter fabric, and weep holes on every wall above 2 feet.

!

“Our permit got denied for missing engineering.”

San Diego requires stamped engineered plans for walls over 3 feet (bottom of footing to top of wall). We coordinate the engineer and the submission as part of our scope.” from premium. We don’t install the cheap stuff.

!

“The seams are everywhere”

Bad seaming = visible lines forever. Our crew uses overlap-cut + proper seam tape + brushing direction — you don’t see where one piece ends and the next begins.

Frequently Asked

San Diego Retaining Walls FAQ

Real answers about wall heights, permits, drainage, and what makes a retaining wall last.

When does a retaining wall need a permit in San Diego? +
Walls over 3 feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall require permits and engineered plans. Walls under 3 feet typically do not, though jurisdictions vary. We confirm before quoting.
Why do retaining walls lean or fail? +
Three causes: no drainage layer behind the wall (hydrostatic pressure), insufficient footing depth, and no geogrid reinforcement for taller walls. We address all three on every wall we build.
What materials do you build with? +
Engineered concrete block (Keystone, Allan Block, Versa-Lok), natural stone, poured concrete with rebar, and gabion baskets for specific applications. We match the wall to the slope, soil, and aesthetic.
What is a typical budget for a residential retaining wall? +
Walls under 3 feet: $40 to $75 per linear foot. Walls 3 to 6 feet with engineering: $100 to $180 per linear foot. Walls over 6 feet: $200+ per linear foot depending on geogrid and reinforcement.
How long does a retaining wall project take? +
Walls under 3 feet: 1 to 2 weeks of build time. Walls 3 to 6 feet with engineered plans: 4 to 8 weeks total (engineering, permit, build). We give you a fixed timeline once we have the site survey.
What warranty comes with the wall? +
5-year workmanship guarantee on the wall structure, footing, and drainage system. Lifetime call-back. We come back at year one to inspect drainage and tighten the cap course if needed.
