The Basics
What Is Concreting & Masonry?
Concreting and masonry is the trade of building durable structures and surfaces from poured concrete and from units like block, brick, and stone bound with mortar. It covers slabs, driveways, patios, foundations, retaining walls, steps, columns, and decorative features. The work combines proper base preparation, steel reinforcement, and correct curing to produce surfaces and structures that carry load and resist cracking.
Concrete and masonry work draws on several materials. Poured concrete comes in finishes like broom (a slip-resistant texture), stamped (patterned to mimic stone or brick), colored, and exposed aggregate (washed to reveal the stone). CMU (concrete masonry units, the standard gray block) builds walls, columns, and planters and accepts stucco or veneer. Brick and natural stone set in mortar create facing and features. Reinforcement uses rebar and wire mesh, and mixes can include fiber or admixtures for strength. Joints and surfaces get sealed against stains and moisture. We source the finish, color, and unit type that fit your project rather than one fixed product line.
Our Process
How We Build Concreting & Masonry in San Diego
1
Layout and forming
We mark the pour or wall line, set forms or footings, and confirm grade and drainage direction so the finished work sheds water correctly.
2
Subgrade and base prep
The subgrade is excavated and a compacted aggregate base is placed with a plate compactor, giving concrete a stable, even foundation.
3
Reinforcement
Rebar or wire mesh is positioned and tied for slabs, and vertical steel is set and grouted into CMU walls to meet Southern California seismic standards.
4
Pouring or laying
Concrete is poured, screeded, and consolidated, or block, brick, and stone are laid in mortar course by course, kept level and plumb throughout.
5
Finishing
Flatwork is floated and given its final texture, broom, stamp, color, or exposed aggregate, while masonry joints are struck and tooled clean.
6
Control joints and curing
Control joints are cut into slabs to direct any cracking to planned lines, and the concrete is kept moist as it cures to reach full strength.
7
Sealing and cleanup
A protective sealer is applied to guard against stains, UV fade, and moisture, and the site is cleaned before the final walkthrough.
Cost
How Much Does Concreting & Masonry Cost in San Diego?
In San Diego, a basic broom-finish concrete slab runs about $7 to $12 per square foot, while stamped, colored, or exposed-aggregate finishes rise to roughly $14 to $30 per square foot given the added labor. Masonry work such as CMU walls with stucco or stone veneer is priced by the face square foot and varies with height and finish. Demolition of existing concrete adds around $2 to $5 per square foot, and access, drainage, and reinforcement affect the total. We provide a free on-site estimate for your specific scope.
San Diego Specifics
Built for the San Diego Climate
San Diego’s zone 10a to 10b climate spares concrete from freeze-thaw damage, but expansive clay soils and seismic requirements shape the work. Inland clay in areas like Santee and Lakeside swells and shrinks with moisture, so slabs need proper control joints, reinforcement, and a compacted base to avoid cracking. Southern California seismic codes require steel reinforcement in masonry walls. Coastal salt air makes sealing worthwhile to protect surfaces, and grading concrete to drain winter rain away from foundations prevents the moisture swings that undermine flatwork over time.

Complete the Project
Homeowners who take on this project often pair it with these.
A basic broom-finish slab runs about $7 to $12 per square foot, and stamped, colored, or exposed-aggregate finishes rise to $14 to $30 per square foot. A 400 square foot stamped patio often lands somewhere around $6,000 to $12,000. Masonry like CMU walls is priced separately by face square foot, and demolition of old concrete adds $2 to $5 per square foot.
How long does concrete take to cure?
Concrete is usually firm enough to walk on within 24 to 48 hours, ready for foot traffic in a few days, and safe for vehicles after about 7 days. It continues gaining strength and reaches roughly full cure at 28 days. In San Diego’s dry heat we keep the surface moist during early curing so it does not dry too fast and crack.
Do I need a permit for concrete or masonry work?
Flatwork like a patio slab typically does not need a permit, but a new driveway approach in the public right-of-way, structural masonry walls, and retaining walls over about 3 to 4 feet do. Seismic reinforcement rules apply to load-bearing masonry across Southern California. We handle permit submittal and inspections where the scope requires them.
Why does concrete crack, and can it be prevented?
Concrete cracks from shrinkage as it cures, from soil movement, and from missing or poorly placed control joints. San Diego’s expansive clay soils make a compacted base and correct joint spacing essential. Cracking cannot be eliminated entirely, but proper reinforcement, control joints cut at the right intervals, and good drainage direct it to planned lines and keep it cosmetic rather than structural.
Stamped concrete or pavers, which should I choose?
Stamped concrete gives a patterned, seamless surface at $14 to $30 per square foot and mimics stone or brick, while pavers from Belgard or Angelus flex with clay soils and allow single-unit repairs. Stamped concrete can crack over time in expansive soils, whereas pavers move with the ground. The choice comes down to budget, repairability, and the look you want.
How do I maintain concrete surfaces?
Reseal every 2 to 3 years to protect against stains and UV fade, especially on stamped or colored concrete where the sealer also refreshes the finish. Clean spills promptly, keep drainage clear so water sheds away, and repair small cracks before moisture works underneath. Sealing matters more near the coast where salt air is present.
How long does concrete last?
Well-built concrete flatwork lasts 20 to 30 years or more in San Diego’s mild climate, and CMU masonry walls can last much longer. Longevity depends on a compacted base, proper reinforcement, control joints, and drainage. The most common shortener is soil movement under an inadequate base, which is why expansive-clay inland lots need careful prep.
Can I pour concrete myself?
Small projects like a mow strip are DIY-friendly, but larger slabs, driveways, and any masonry wall are difficult to get right. Base compaction, reinforcement placement, control-joint timing, and finishing all affect whether the concrete lasts or cracks early. For structural masonry, San Diego seismic codes and permit requirements make a licensed contractor the safer route.
