The Basics
What Is Synthetic Turf & Artificial Grass?
Synthetic turf, also called artificial grass, is a manufactured surface of plastic blades stitched into a backing and installed over a compacted base. It replaces natural lawn with a green, low-maintenance surface that needs no mowing or watering. Modern turf drains through perforated backing and uses infill to keep blades upright and cushion the surface underfoot.
Quality turf uses UV-stable polyethylene, nylon, or polypropylene blades tufted into a permeable backing with drainage holes, described by face weight (ounces of yarn per square yard) and blade shape. Under it goes a Class II road base (crushed aggregate) or decomposed granite, compacted to a firm, level pad, over a weed barrier fabric. Infill keeps blades standing and adds cushion: rounded silica sand for general use, antimicrobial acrylic-coated sand (brands like Envirofill) or zeolite for pet areas to control odor. Older crumb rubber is now less common for home lawns. Edges are held with bender board or nailer boards, and turf is secured with galvanized nails or staples, plus gopher wire in rodent-prone yards.
Our Process
How We Build Synthetic Turf & Artificial Grass in San Diego
Remove existing lawn
The old grass and roughly three to four inches of soil are stripped so there is room for a proper base. Existing spray heads are capped and any old irrigation is removed or repurposed for planting beds.
Rough grade and slope
The area is shaped to drain away from the house and toward outlets. Getting the slope right now prevents puddles and low spots after the turf is down.
Install base material
Class II road base or decomposed granite is spread in lifts, wet, and compacted with a plate compactor to a firm, level pad. A solid base is what keeps turf from rippling or sinking over time.
Lay weed barrier and gopher wire
A geotextile weed fabric goes over the base to block growth, and galvanized gopher wire is added where burrowing rodents are a problem.
Position and seam turf
Turf rolls are laid with all blades running the same direction, then trimmed and joined with seam tape and adhesive so seams disappear. Careful blade direction is what makes the lawn look natural.
Secure edges and anchor
Perimeter and seams are fastened with landscape nails or staples into the base, and edges are locked to bender board so the turf cannot lift or shift.
Spread infill and brush
Silica sand or antimicrobial infill is spread across the surface and power-broomed in, standing the blades up, adding ballast, and giving the lawn its cushioned, upright feel.
Cost
How Much Does Synthetic Turf & Artificial Grass Cost in San Diego?
Installed artificial grass in San Diego generally runs about $12 to $20 per square foot, with basic family lawns near $12 to $14 and pet-ready or cooling systems reaching the low $20s. A typical 1,000-square-foot lawn lands around $12,000 to $20,000, covering turf, base, infill, weed barrier, and labor. Access, drainage correction, seams, and custom borders move the price. San Diego County Water Authority and SoCal WaterSmart turf-replacement rebates can offset roughly $2 to $4 per square foot removed. We provide a free on-site estimate.
San Diego Specifics
Built for the San Diego Climate
San Diego’s zone 10a to 10b climate makes turf popular because year-round sun and tight water rules make natural lawn expensive to keep green. Turf uses no irrigation, which helps during drought restrictions, though dark blades absorb heat and can feel hot on inland lots in Santee or El Cajon; lighter colors and cooling infill help. Coastal yards deal with less heat but need good drainage for winter rain. A compacted, free-draining base matters here, since San Diego’s clay soils hold water and can heave a poorly built lawn.

Frequently Asked
Synthetic Turf & Artificial Grass in San Diego: FAQs
How much does artificial turf cost in San Diego?
Installed turf generally runs about $12 to $20 per square foot. A basic family lawn sits near $12 to $14, while pet systems with antimicrobial infill and cooling turf reach the low $20s. A 1,000-square-foot yard typically totals $12,000 to $20,000 including base, infill, and labor. Turf-replacement rebates from San Diego County Water Authority can lower the net cost by roughly $2 to $4 per square foot.
Does artificial grass qualify for a water rebate?
Removing living lawn to install artificial grass can qualify for SoCal WaterSmart and San Diego County Water Authority turf-replacement rebates, roughly $2 to $4 per square foot. Rules change by year and agency, and some programs favor planted low-water landscapes over turf, so apply and get your Notice to Proceed before removing anything. Check current terms for your exact address before starting.
Is artificial turf good for dogs?
Yes, with the right build. Pet systems use a permeable backing, a free-draining base, and antimicrobial infill such as Envirofill or zeolite to control ammonia odor. Solid waste lifts off and urine drains through, then the surface is rinsed occasionally. Blades hold up to digging and running better than natural grass, and there is no mud, which is why many San Diego pet owners switch.
How long does artificial grass last?
Good turf typically lasts about 15 to 20 years in San Diego, backed by manufacturer warranties often in the 8 to 15 year range. UV-stable polyethylene blades resist fading in our strong sun, and lifespan depends heavily on base quality and infill upkeep. High-traffic paths and pet zones wear first. Periodic brushing and topping up infill keep blades upright and extend the life.
Does turf get too hot in San Diego?
Artificial grass absorbs sun and can feel hot on inland afternoons in areas like El Cajon or Poway, warmer than natural lawn but cooler than concrete or pavers. Lighter blade colors, cooling infill, and a quick spray of water bring the surface temperature down. Coastal yards with regular fog stay cooler. Shade sails or nearby trees also help pet and play areas stay comfortable.
Artificial turf versus natural sod, which is better?
Turf costs more up front, around $12 to $20 per square foot, but needs no mowing, watering, or fertilizer, so it saves water and time long term. Sod is cheaper to install, about $1.50 to $4 per square foot, feels cooler and natural, but needs ongoing water and care. Turf suits low-water, high-use yards; sod suits homeowners who want a living lawn and cooler summer surface.
Does synthetic turf drain well in the rain?
Quality turf has a perforated backing that drains through to the base below, and a properly compacted, sloped base carries water to outlets. This matters in San Diego where winter storms drop heavy rain fast. Drainage problems almost always trace back to a poor base or missing slope, not the turf itself, which is why the base build is the most important step.
How do you maintain artificial grass?
Upkeep is light: rinse off dust and pet spots, brush the blades against the grain to keep them upright, and remove leaves with a blower or plastic rake. Every year or two, top up infill in high-traffic paths so the surface stays cushioned. No mowing, watering, or fertilizing is needed, which is the main appeal over a natural lawn in a dry climate.
